A Preferential Growth Channel for Supermassive Black Holes in Elliptical Galaxies at z ? 2

چکیده
The assembly of stellar and supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass in elliptical galaxies since $z\sim1$ can help to diagnose the origins locally-observed correlations between SMBH mass. We therefore construct three samples galaxies, one at $z\sim0$ two $0.7\lesssim z \lesssim2.5$, quantify their relative positions $M_{BH}-M_*$ plane. Using a Bayesian analysis framework, we find evidence for translational offsets both local sample higher redshift samples. are small, consistent with measurement bias, but much larger, reaching factor seven $z\sim0$. magnitude offset may also depend on redshift, $\sim20$ $z\sim 2$. result is robust against variation high low changes approach. evolution challenging explain terms selection biases. conclude that either there physical mechanism preferentially grows SMBHs $z\lesssim 2$, or biases underestimated, redshift.

The growth of supermassive black holes in pseudo-bulges, classical bulges and elliptical galaxies
Using results from structural analysis of a sample of nearly 1000 local galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we estimate how the mass in central black holes is distributed amongst elliptical galaxies, classical bulges and pseudo-bulges, and investigate the relation between their stellar masses and central stellar velocity dispersion σ. Assuming a single relation between elliptical galaxy...
متن کاملSupermassive Black Holes in Disk Galaxies
Dynamical searches find central dark objects – candidate supermassive black holes (BHs) – in at least 34 galaxies. The demographics of these objects lead to the following conclusions: (1) BH mass correlates with the luminosity of the bulge component of the host galaxy, albeit with considerable scatter. The median BH mass fraction is 0.15% of the mass of the bulge. The quartiles are 0.09% and 0....
متن کاملDo Supermassive Black Holes Exist at the Center of Galaxies?
General relativistic models of star clusters with large redshifts are investigated to see whether such objects can be stable and long-lived based on evaporation and collision timescales and stability criteria. We find that physically reasonable models of massive clusters of stellar remnants can exist with masses ≥ 10 M⊙, which could simulate black holes at the center of galaxies with large M/L ...
متن کاملThe Central Structure of Elliptical Galaxies and the Stellar-Dynamical Search for Supermassive Black Holes
Elliptical galaxies are divided into two types: galaxies with steep prooles that show no breaks in slope or that have extra light at small radii compared to a S ersic function t and galaxies that show a break from steep outer prooles to shallow inner prooles. These cuspy cores are important because they are a sign of undiscovered physical processes. Prooles with extra light near the center rese...
متن کاملSupermassive Black Holes in Elliptical Galaxies: Switching from Very Bright to Very Dim
Relativistic outflows (mainly observed in the radio) are a characteristic feature of both Galactic stellar mass black holes and supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of Galactic sources have shown that the outflow is strong at low accretion rates, but it weakens dramatically or disappears completely at high accretion rates, manifesting structural changes in...
